The travel market is vast and growing rapidly. According to the US Travel Association, travel in 2022 generated $1.2 trillion in direct spending and had a $2.6 trillion economic impact. To address the fragmented ways travelers share their experiences, I created a travel-focused media platform. It provides users with a digital travel journal to easily document and share their journeys, fostering connection and inspiration among fellow travelers.
Digitally capture and share lifelong travel memories while fostering a vibrant community of explorers.
Empowering a vibrant community of travelers to connect, inspire, and enrich each other through the sharing and creation of meaningful travel experiences.
I went through a thorough amount of research to see if an app such as Jetset existed. I also wanted to see what was already good in the market and similar apps that may not provide the best experience.
Is this feasible and is this desirable? Do users want this app? Is it possible to create this and still be successful?
The canvas allowed me to visualize that Jetset was a viable business decision. But I needed to figure out the market and who my users would be.
Identifying my market niche
After analyzing competitors and online critiques, I created a list of desired features for Jetset. It became clear that no existing app offered the comprehensive functionality I envisioned for Jetset.
Understanding the primary concerns of my users
Meet Sarah Lin and Sid Singh
Sarah and Sid are keen to find a space to make cute digital diaries
Breaking down the user journey allowed to me understand the user flow of Jetset.
I need to focus in on: -> THE INITIAL APP WALKTHROUGH -> DETAILED & EASY USER INTERFACE FOR JOURNAL ENTRIES-> A SIMPLE, INTERACTIVE FEED + DISCOVER PAGE
Getting into the information architecture of Jetset
The information architecture solidified my initial feature ideas. Creating categories helped me visualize Jetset's key elements, which competitive analysis revealed as crucial for my target audience
Building out the first iteration of wireframes
After building out the information architecture, I started to map out the flow of the app. My biggest learning was finding inspiration from sources that have allowed for users to easily use their platforms. Since the app focuses heavily on customization, the creation portion of Jetset is a difficult space to navigate. How can I build a tool that is intuitive and accessible but gives the user the freedom to express themselves creatively?

Getting feedback through user testing
✏️To identify key gaps in my wireframes that might not make sense to the user
✏️Understand the needs of a user who likes to document their memories
✏️ Figure out how customizable the "create a diary feature" needs to be
A feed can be very limiting for a niche space so creating an FYP with a "Following" action button toggle would allow for a more engaging travel diary exploration experience
Based on my interviews, 5/5 users felt that the customizations were great but they could be taken in a different direction, Whether that be standardizing the font or adding a lot more prefilled travel topics, adding a sticker section, or incorporating a drawing feature... the feedback was a lot! It really put into perspective what my customer is really looking for: an intuitive, creative, and seamless experience.
The current feed interaction and profile page interaction could be more exciting. Figuring out how to display diary entry previews would waste less of the user's time. And on the Profile Page, displaying a user's travels in a more inviting way, such as a 3D globe with pins for entries would create for an interesting UI spin on the class profile page. I want to also add travel stats to the section, which incentives users to travel/post more.
"Right now the feed feels too much like Instagram for me. Also, it would be nice to get a preview of the diary before I had to click on it"
- Sidaarth Sabhnani
"I think having the option to toggle between a For You Page and my followings like how TikTok does it would improve the feed since it is not like everyone is actively posting diaries"
- Hazel Shah
If there is that much customization, I think it is slightly confusing. I think you’re trying to replicate a diary experience but also think about how easy it should be to navigate”
- Vanessa Kang
“What about a scanning option? It kinda ties back into what I was saying about people who like to collect printed things. Imagine someone drew something on a napkin and was able to scan it into the app.”
- Vanessa Kang
“On the home feed I think you need to figure out how to get users to click in to diaries so that it is intuitive to the user and is interactive.”
- Caroline Kellet
Changes made post-testing
I made significant revisions to my designs following testing. These revisions include updating the interactions on the Feed Page, adding a new Create a Diary flow, and implementing major design updates. I also added pictures and colors so that I could accurately visualize the Jetset brand colors and aesthetic, which is a key part of the interaction.
The new interaction consists of swiping like a book and being able to toggle between a For You page and a Following page... But there are lot of small interactions that are missing can could enhance the experience.
The new page is more clear, the navbar has been updated. The entire top section has been redesigned and travel stats have been added to motivate users to travel and document their travels. I still need to explore the 3D globe interaction.
Need to work on the interaction to create a diary. I think it is too bold right now and doesn't provide an excited and interactive brand experience.
Same interaction from before. There were not many critiques on this page but I am exploring other explore page experiences.
I focused in on the user's ability to intuitively customize on the app. When they click a section, a new toolbar with specific customizations comes up to lead them to an action
Within each interaction comes many smaller interactions. For the background color feature. I limited the colors to fit the identity of the brand.
I wanted to provide the user with guidance, for those who may want some more ideas.

INTERACTION:
I need to explore unique interactive experiences. How can I gamify the experience? How can I go beyond a static app?
ENGAGEMENT:
How can I make the experience of reading a diary more interesting? Although I am trying to mimic the diary experience, it needs to have a factor that makes the user want to stay on the app.
SIMPLICITY:
How can I make the Create a Diary experience easy for users who want some travel topic guidance. Templates? Question and Answer Generator?

Styleframe Options
The first one was the winner! I showed the design to over 30 people and they all really enjoyed the bright colors of style-guide #1
Continue to iterate...
✤ Continue developing the wireframes, particularly by expanding the Create a Diary flow. I aim to explore ways to integrate AI, making the experience more user-friendly for those who might prefer not to write out an entire entry.
✤ Conduct user tests to gather feedback on the designs. Continue iterating to ensure the designs align with users' needs as I work through this process.
